A Life Defined by Unpredictability

Donovan’s condition created early, constant challenges. For example, at age five, he developed an inhibitor to his clotting factor, which required a rigorous medication regimen. This taught him early on that his health would always have unpredictable elements.

The 2022 Turning Point

On July 10, 2022, Donovan suffered two simultaneous bleeds in his right elbow while playing basketball. This severe injury led to: compartment syndrome, two major surgeries, and 45 nights across four different hospitals.

This difficult experience solidified a profound lesson: "No matter how great my clotting factor is, how healthy I am, and how much I take care of my body, hemophilia is unpredictable and I am not invincible.” He found solace and strength during this period through daily prayer, reading the Bible, and listening to uplifting music.

His Resilience System

Donovan's personal growth is rooted in a clear set of guiding principles. His biggest inspiration is Jesus Christ, to whom he dedicated his life in April 2022. This commitment has provided tools for navigating the complexities of his emotional landscape, helping him manage his emotional intelligence, temper, and patience. He strives to embody core values like kindness, love, and integrity, which he diligently studies and practices.

  • He holds a deep reverence for faith, resilience, and strength, believing these qualities were crucial for navigating his darkest times.

  • He actively cultivates his resilience through consistent prayer, reading verses from the Bible, and maintaining a strong hope for a bright future.

  • He consciously chooses to approach every new environment with intrinsic confidence, viewing himself as the strongest and most resilient person in the room.

Defining Success and Self-Care

Success is Effort

For Donovan, success is defined as "a measure for a goal or outcome." It’s not just about the result, but the dedication and effort applied. His goal process involves focusing his efforts, working hard and smart, tracking his progress, and adjusting his timeline as necessary.

Prioritizing Self-Care

To maintain a positive mindset, Donovan commits to a comprehensive self-care routine. This includes maintaining his Physical Health through a healthy diet, strictly adhering to his medication schedule, and tracking his weight. He also prioritizes his Medical Team with regular check-ups at his Hemophilia Treatment Center and with his primary care physician. For his Mental Well-being, he enjoys volunteering, reading reflective materials, practicing gratitude, and enjoying nature through walks, hikes, and stargazing. As a clear boundary, he consciously avoids negative national news to protect his mental health.

Stepping Out of the Comfort Zone

An unplanned trip to Los Angeles, California, for an ankle injury became a significant learning experience. This journey led him to an orthopedic doctor specializing in bleeding disorders. The good Outcome was that his ankle did not require surgery. The key Lesson he learned was the vital importance of thinking outside the box and proactively seeking advice from community members to make the best treatment decisions.

Meaningful Connections and Legacy

Donovan describes himself as an introvert who prefers purposeful interactions. He values strong relationships with his doctors, fellow rare disease advocates, and mentors, noting that the Connection Key is caring about the other person and consistent communication.

Legacy

He hopes to be remembered for his impact and character: a strong man of God, kind, loyal, and a man of strong principles; a powerful bleeding disorders and rare disease advocate and active volunteer; and someone who, despite a terrible, challenging chronic illness, overcame every obstacle, grew stronger each time, and was faithful to God during both difficult and good moments.

Donovan's motivation and inspiration come from God, especially during difficult times. He endures struggles by focusing on future aspirations.

His practical advice for finding purpose:

  • Participate in Something Bigger: "Get involved in something that is bigger than you," such as a volunteer group, organization, or club. This helps you learn about teamwork and how to interact with others.

  • Live by a Code: He suggests studying the Bible with a knowledgeable person to live a more fulfilling life, believing that living like Jesus Christ offers a deeply fulfilling existence.

His personal mantra, from The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp,

serves as a simple yet powerful guide for his actions:

"Make Magic. Do Good."
